Fossils show that life has evolved into modern species by a process of very slow change and that all life descended from a common ancestor. From this simple ancestor, probably an autotrophic type of simple cell, organisms have developed an increasing complexity of body parts, and the species present on earth have increased until it is now thought to be about 30 million.
